Media giant NBC has announced that its Peacock streaming service will provide Spanish-language coverage in the US of all 64 matches during the upcoming Qatar 2022 World Cup.
NBC-owned Telemundo picked up the exclusive US territory Spanish-language broadcast partnership for Qatar 2022 in 2011, paying around US$600 million for a contract covering all major Fifa events between 2015 and 2022.
The World Cup will air on the Telemundo and Universo linear networks, but NBC has now confirmed that it will utilise Peacock as its digital broadcast destination for Qatar 2022. Within the platform, a dedicated World Cup hub and a ‘Copa Mundial’ virtual channel will be created, with games produced by Telemundo’s content brand Tplus.
In addition, Peacock will simulcast all World Cup matches from Telemundo Deportes, with the 24/7 Copa Mundial channel will feature a range of other tournament content including highlights, analysis and debate shows.
The opening 12 matches of the competition will be available free of charge to Peacock subscribers, with the remaining 52 matches available for premium members.
The Qatar 2022 play from NBC is looking to leverage the significant appetite for soccer among the US Spanish-language audience. Telemundo’s recent The Future is Fútbol report found that 56 per cent of Spanish-language speakers in the US prefer World Cup coverage in Spanish.
During the Russia 2018 World Cup, Telemundo Deportes made up 41 per cent of the game viewership in the US, averaging 2.02 million viewers per game despite having a much smaller footprint than Fox, which has the English-language rights.
“Peacock is thrilled to stream for the first time the biggest global soccer event, the Fifa World Cup,” said Rick Cordella, Peacock chief commercial officer.
“Our offering on Peacock will complement and extend Telemundo Deportes programming to a wider audience with 24/7 World Cup content carefully curated and created for younger audiences with the purpose of serving the full spectrum of Hispanic audiences and soccer fans in the US.”
